Homoeopathy in its current form has a history of about 200 years of clinical practice. It was developed by a German physician called Samuel Hahnemann who discovered in his clinical experience that he obtained successful cure of disease by applying two main principles to his medical practice.
The first principle was ‘like treats like’ or the ‘law of similars’, and the second was the principle of the minimum dose. The smaller the dosage of medicine the smoother and more effective was the return to health.
His belief was that the path to cure must be gentle and to cure a disease you must stimulate a person’s ‘vital force’ which can be interpreted as an element of the immune system in the western medical sense or ‘Qi’ in the context of Chinese medicine (see acupuncture section).
A correctly chosen medicine administered within the framework of the above principles was found to bring about cure. Homoeopathy remains a popular form of treatment in Europe and is routinely used in the sub-continent of India by a large part of the population.
